Retirees discover new way to work and travel 2010-02-18 Many people are discovering that working later in life can be an enjoyable pursuit. Some may stay longer at their workplaces and dial back their hours - so-called phased retirement. Others, though, are living on the road and working at state recreation sites in exchange for a campsite. The New York Times, reporting the trend this week, suggested that a generation of "footloose and itinerant" older people is looking to get out of the house without breaking the bank. They are opting to become "work-campers" - those who lead walking tours or pick up trash and, in return, score a place to stay. The Times, quoting camp franchiser Kampgrounds of America Inc., says that there are an estimated 80,000 work-campers around the country. The job can be ideal for retirees who like the outdoors and thrive on meeting new people. There are hardships, of course: There are few constants when living on the road, and work-campers have to give up many of the comforts of home. But for a generation that is increasingly looking to get out into the world, work-camping may be a perfect solution. ![]() |
